WE HAVE WORLD-RENOWNED NEIGHBORS AIR FORCE RESEARCH LABORATORY SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES LOS ALAMOS NATIONAL LABORATORY PARTNERS OUTSIDE NEW MEXICO BALANCE OF POWER Revolutionizing the power grid is necessary for our future and our security, and UNM is doing its part in a statewide initiative to accomplish just that. Together, we will modernize our century-old electrical grid to make it more resilient, reliable and ready to handle the renewable technologies of today, and of tomorrow. As more people are turning to alternative and clean energies like solar, and choosing technologies such as plug-in electrical vehicles, the grid and distribution systems of electricity need to be able to handle it. These forms of energy are often variable based on the amount of sun or wind available, so a modern grid must take this into account so that efficient and reliable power can flow to the user on demand. And we’re energized to make it happen. As part of a National Science Foundation EPSCoR grant, this project will link researchers and students from The University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech and Santa Fe Community College with researchers and scientists at Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Microgrid Systems Laboratory. Also involved are industry partners such as Siemens, Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), the Electric Power Research Institute, Oracle and El Paso Electric. In fact, since we have three national laboratories in our backyard, all within 100 miles of campus, we’re able to collaborate on top-level research with some of the most technologically advanced programs in the world. These partnerships and the experience they provide create countless opportunities for our research students. Beyond intern and job opportunities, they are able to work on some of the most important research of our time, with some of the top scientists in the world.
