It’s a remarkable report card, and we’ll keep striving to improve it. Because it’s our goal to provide the best care possible for New Mexicans everywhere. It helps that we’re home to the only Level I Trauma Center in the state, and that we conduct vital research, much of it aimed at tackling healthcare issues unique to New Mexico. Today, more than 40% of doctors practicing in our state graduated from right here. If you want to become a powerfully prepared doctor, researcher or healer, this is the place to make your mark. FIRST TO TEACH THE WAY MEDICINE IS TAUGHT. We’re the first medical school in the U.S. to adopt a medical Problem-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum. What’s that? It’s a student-centered approach that allows knowledge to be mastered through the solving of problems, hands-on, in the context in which it will actually be used. Caring for everybody in every way. She came to New Mexico with her family in search of a better life. She expected it to be hard to come from Vietnam and start over, and there were days when it seemed utterly impossible to go on. Even with scholarships, every day was a struggle. Amazingly, she turned crushing financial hardship into her tailwind. Let adversity drive her on. Fortunately, her BA/MD path was designed to help her succeed and be as e³cient as possible. She earned her bachelor's in just three years and her MD a year early. And became UNM's first BA/MD alumna physician. He’s brought his personal care to families the world over and, most importantly, he’s here for students. Dr. Kaufman was a founding member of the Department of Family & Community Medicine; he believes in treating people, not “patients.” And his pioneering attitude and extraordinary contributions have earned him the status of Living Legend at UNM—that, and Professor.
